International Draughts in the USA. 20 Years Later…
The US Open Championship 2026 in international draughts has come to an end. The tournament was held in Huntington, New York. As is traditionally the case, a separate classification was held within the open tournament for players representing the United States, with the U.S. champion and medalists determined based on those results.
Unfortunately, in terms of its field, this tournament was one of the weakest in the entire history of ICAONA competitions. A total of 24 players took part, but only 9 of them represented the United States. The largest group consisted of young players from Taiwan — 11 participants, more than the total number of American players. Tournament Standings
This ratio inevitably raises questions about the representativeness of the national classification and the fairness of the distribution of places among American players. Within the same open tournament, they faced foreign participants a different number of times and, consequently, competed under significantly different tournament conditions.
The winner of the US Open 2026 and U.S. champion, Souleymane Keita, played only two of his eight games against foreign participants. The U.S. silver medalist, Yevhen Bohush, played four such games, while the bronze medalist, Yves Ferrier, played five. Thus, the national standings were determined under noticeably different sets of opponents.
This practice has existed within ICAONA for many years. It is understandable that attracting foreign participants allows organizers to increase the size of the tournament and partially address financial issues. However, more than 20 years after the beginning of ICAONA's activities, holding a U.S. championship with only nine American players — in a country with a population of approximately 350 million — is a troubling result.
And this result did not arise by chance. It is the consequence of a lack of long-term strategy and systematic planning for the development of international draughts in the United States, insufficient work with children and young players, and the absence of consistent cooperation with sponsors and organizations providing grants.
In most countries, the national champion and medalists are determined in a separate national championship open to players who are eligible to represent that country. Open international tournaments, meanwhile, are held separately. Such a system provides participants in the national championship with comparable sporting conditions and makes it possible to determine the strongest players in the country more objectively.
The United States should therefore move to a separate U.S. Championship open to all players who are eligible to represent the country, regardless of whether they are members of ICAONA, NDF-USA, another organization, or no organization at all.
Some American players declined to participate in the US Open 2026 precisely because they do not consider the existing system of determining the U.S. championship to be sufficiently fair and representative.
The ongoing conflict between ICAONA and Alexander Rudnitsky also has a negative impact on the U.S. Championships. Rudnitsky is a five-time U.S. champion and one of the leading American organizers and sponsors of international draughts.
Instead of cooperation in the development of international draughts and the MIAMI OPEN project, ICAONA suspended him in 2025 for creating and actively developing NDF and its new MIAMI OPEN project, and excluded him from the 2025 and 2026 U.S. Championships. The absence of one of the country's strongest and most experienced players inevitably reduces the sporting competitiveness and attractiveness of the event.
At the same time, the FMJD Ethics Committee ruled that the suspension was invalid, overturned it, and ordered ICAONA to immediately annul the suspension and restore the player's rights. The FMJD Executive Committee also stated that all players eligible to represent the United States should be allowed to participate in the U.S. Championship upon payment of the established administrative fee, rather than limiting participation to ICAONA members.
The restriction of participation based on membership in a particular organization was recognized as discriminatory and contrary to Article 4.1 of the FMJD Statutes. Nevertheless, ICAONA, as a member of the FMJD, has still not complied with these directives.
Today, American draughts needs not new conflicts, but a clear and long-term development program:
– a separate U.S. Championship open to all American players;
– clear and transparent eligibility criteria;
– a long-term tournament calendar;
– systematic work with children and young players;
– cooperation among organizations and clubs;
– attracting sponsors and grants;
– support for strong international tournaments in the United States.

A New GenerationIn concluding this review, I would especially like to highlight the success of young player Yevhen Bohush. He finished fourth in the overall standings of the US Open 2026 and became the silver medalist of the U.S. Championship. For the first time in the last two decades, a representative of a new generation has emerged among the leading American players. Yevhen is a member of both NDF-USA and ICAONA. His result demonstrates that sporting development is possible when a young player's abilities receive professional support. I would like to wish Yevhen and his coach, NDF-USA President and international-category arbiter Andriy Shcherbatyuk, many more sporting victories. Twenty years later, American international draughts needs to honestly assess the results achieved and move away from the struggle for exclusive control toward cooperation for the benefit of the players, the younger generation, and the future of the sport in the United States. |

Завершился US Open Championship 2026 по международным шашкам, проходивший в Хантингтоне, штат Нью-Йорк. В рамках открытого турнира традиционно проводился отдельный зачёт среди игроков, представляющих США, по результатам которого определялись чемпион и призёры чемпионата страны.
К сожалению, по составу участников этот турнир оказался одним из самых слабых за всё время проведения соревнований ICAONA. В нём приняли участие 24 игрока, однако только 9 из них представляли США. Самой многочисленной группой стали молодые спортсмены из Тайваня — 11 человек, то есть больше, чем всех американских участников. Турнирная таблица
Такое соотношение неизбежно ставит вопрос о репрезентативности национального зачёта и справедливости распределения мест среди американских игроков. В рамках единого открытого турнира они встречались с иностранными участниками разное количество раз и, соответственно, находились в существенно различавшихся турнирных условиях.
Победитель US Open 2026 и чемпион США Сулейман Кейта из восьми партий только две сыграл с иностранными участниками. Серебряный призёр чемпионата США Евгений Богуш провёл четыре такие партии, а бронзовый призёр Ив Ферье — пять. Таким образом, места в национальном зачёте определялись при заметно различавшихся составах соперников.
Подобная практика существует в ICAONA уже много лет. Понятно, что привлечение иностранных участников позволяет организаторам увеличить численность турнира и частично решить финансовые вопросы. Однако спустя более 20 лет после начала деятельности ICAONA проведение чемпионата США с участием всего 9 американских игроков — в стране с населением около 350 миллионов человек — является тревожным результатом.
И он возник не случайно. К нему привели отсутствие долгосрочной стратегии и системного планирования развития международных шашек в США, недостаточная работа с детьми и молодёжью, а также отсутствие постоянного взаимодействия со спонсорами и организациями, предоставляющими гранты.
В большинстве стран чемпион и призёры национального чемпионата определяются в отдельном соревновании, к которому допускаются игроки, имеющие право представлять эту страну. Открытые международные турниры при этом проводятся отдельно. Такая система обеспечивает участникам национального чемпионата сопоставимые спортивные условия и позволяет более объективно определить сильнейших игроков страны.
Поэтому США необходимо перейти к проведению отдельного чемпионата страны, открытого для всех игроков, имеющих право представлять США, — независимо от их членства в ICAONA, NDF-USA, другой организации или отсутствия организационной принадлежности.
Некоторые американские игроки отказались от участия в US Open 2026 именно потому, что не считают существующую систему национального зачёта достаточно справедливой и репрезентативной.
Негативно на проведение чемпионатов США влияет и продолжающийся конфликт между ICAONA и Александром Рудницким — пятикратным чемпионом США, одним из ведущих американских организаторов и спонсоров международных шашек.
Вместо сотрудничества в развитии международных шашек и проекта MIAMI OPEN ICAONA дисквалифицировала его в 2025 году именно за создание и активное развитие NDF и его нового проекта MIAMI OPEN и не допустила к чемпионатам США 2025 и 2026 годов. Отсутствие одного из сильнейших и наиболее опытных игроков страны неизбежно снижает спортивную остроту и привлекательность соревнования.
При этом Комитет по этике FMJD признал дисквалификацию недействительной, отменил её и потребовал от ICAONA немедленно аннулировать её и восстановить права игрока. Исполнительный комитет FMJD также указал, что к чемпионату США должны допускаться все игроки, имеющие право представлять США, при уплате установленного административного сбора, а не только члены ICAONA.
Ограничение участия по признаку членства в определённой организации было признано дискриминационным и противоречащим статье 4.1 Устава FMJD. Тем не менее ICAONA, являясь членом FMJD, до сих пор не выполнила эти указания.
Сегодня американским шашкам необходимы не новые конфликты, а ясная и долгосрочная программа развития:
– отдельный чемпионат США, открытый для всех американских игроков;
– единые и прозрачные критерии допуска;
– долгосрочный календарь соревнований;
– системная работа с детьми и молодёжью;
– сотрудничество между организациями и клубами;
– привлечение спонсоров и грантов;
– поддержка сильных международных турниров в США.

Новое поколениеЗавершая этот обзор, особенно хочется отметить успех молодого игрока Евгения Богуша. Он занял четвёртое место в общем зачёте US Open 2026 и стал серебряным призёром чемпионата США. Впервые за последние два десятилетия среди ведущих американских игроков появился представитель нового поколения. Евгений состоит в NDF-USA и ICAONA. Его результат показывает, что спортивное развитие возможно тогда, когда способности молодого игрока получают профессиональную поддержку. Хочется пожелать Евгению и его тренеру — президенту NDF-USA, арбитру международной категории Андрею Щербатюку — новых спортивных побед. Спустя 20 лет американским международным шашкам необходимо честно оценить достигнутые результаты и перейти от борьбы за исключительное право управлять к совместной работе ради игроков, молодёжи и будущего этого вида спорта в Соединённых Штатах. |
