Can another new center for the development of world draughts be created in the United States?
This question is being discussed more and more often today in the international draughts community. The emergence of The American Draughts Project, initiated by “The NDF of the USA” with the participation of one of the most titled players in the world history of the game — 22-time World Champion Alexander Shvartsman, may become the beginning of a new stage in the development of draughts. The project combines sporting competitions, international cooperation and social initiatives, offering a fresh view of the future of intellectual sport.
A new stage in the development of draughts in the USA
With the emergence of NDF, draughts players from different countries are increasingly paying attention to the United States. A country with enormous intellectual potential, a developed sports infrastructure and a powerful educational system is gradually becoming a new point of growth for the development of draughts in America.
It is in this context that The American Draughts Project was created — an initiative aimed at developing draughts in the country and strengthening their international presence.
The project brings together the experience of players, organizers and enthusiasts who are convinced that draughts can occupy a worthy place among the intellectual sports of the 21st century.
Creation of NDF: a new model of development
The National Draughts Federation of the USA was created as an independent non-profit organization whose main task is to give a new impulse to the development of draughts in the United States, support players and create modern international projects.
From the very beginning the federation set several key objectives:
– development of draughts among youth
– organization of international tournaments
– integration of American players into the world community
– development of educational and social programs
– promotion of draughts as an intellectual sport
An important feature of the project is its open international character. The federation seeks to cooperate with players, federations and organizations from different countries.

This team combines sporting experience, organizational capabilities and international connections necessary for the development of the project.
An international tournament as the center of the project
One of the key directions of NDF activity is the organization of a major international draughts tournament in the United States, MIAMI OPEN. In 2025 “The NDF of the USA” already held such a first international tournament — MIAMI OPEN – 2025. The tournament was very successful. Many of the strongest players from 12 countries and four continents took part in it.
But we want to create not just another competition, but an event that will be able to unite the strongest players in the world, young talents and tournament organizers.
The project provides for the holding of a tournament with the participation of international grandmasters, modern media support and wide participation of players from different countries with a significant prize fund.
A brainstorming of the world community
A distinctive feature of the project is the open approach to its formation.
NDF invites players, coaches, organizers and all draughts enthusiasts to take part in an international brainstorming of ideas dedicated to the future tournament.
Proposals may concern:
– the format of the tournament
– the structure of the competitions
– educational programs
– media promotion of the game
The best ideas may be included in the official regulations of the future tournament.
Thus the tournament can become the result of the collective creativity of the international draughts community. And the idea of each of you may become the center of this project. We are waiting for your proposals until April 30, 2026.
Social projects: the first team online championship among prisons
In addition to sporting projects, NDF pays great attention to social initiatives.
On March 5 a unique event took place — the first team draughts championship among prisons in the world.
Preparation for this project was carried out by the National Draughts Federation of the USA for more than six months.
In the pilot online tournament 8 teams from three countries — England, Latvia and Georgia — took part.
The competition was held in cooperation with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), for which such tournaments among correctional institutions have already become a tradition.
Thus, in 2025, 135 teams from 57 countries participated in a similar chess tournament, which shows the scale and significance of this social initiative.
The goal of the project is to give people temporarily deprived of freedom the opportunity to develop intellectual abilities, maintain connection with the educational and cultural environment and prepare for returning to society.
“The NDF of the USA” believes that intellectual games such as draughts and chess can become an important instrument of personal development, self-discipline and social adaptation.

A look into the future
Today The American Draughts Project is at the beginning of its path. But much has already been done. MIAMI OPEN – 2025 has been held, several competitions among children have taken place, a student Evhen Bohush of our NDF President A. Shcherbatyuk for the first time in U.S. history went to the World Youth Championship in Turkey, the first social project in prisons has been successfully completed. Representatives of NDF actively participate in festivals where they attract children and their parents to draughts.
Already now the project unites players from different countries and opens new opportunities for the development of draughts in the United States.
The organizers are convinced that the combination of sporting competitions, educational initiatives and international cooperation will allow the creation in the United States of a new platform for the development of world draughts.
And perhaps this project will become an important step on the path to the future of the game in the United States.
In the history of intellectual games new centers of development appeared where the talent of players, the energy of organizers and the support of the international community met. The American Draughts Project is making its steps in exactly this direction. By combining sporting competitions, educational initiatives and social projects, the National Draughts Federation of the USA seeks to show that this ancient game has a modern future.

Именно в этом контексте был создан The American Draughts Project – инициатива , направленная на развитие шашек в стране и укрепление их международного присутствия.

Создание NDF: новая модель развития
National Draughts Federation of the USA была создана как независимая некоммерческая организация, главной задачей которой является придание нового импульса в развитие шашек в США, поддержка игроков и создание современных международных проектов.
С самого начала федерация поставила перед собой несколько ключевых задач:
– развитие шашек среди молодёжи

Международный турнир как центр проекта

Мозговой штурм мирового сообщества
Особенностью проекта является открытый подход к его формированию.
NDF приглашает игроков, тренеров, организаторов и всех любителей шашек принять участие в международном мозговом штурме идей, посвящённом будущему турниру.
Предложения могут касаться:
– формата турнира
– структуры соревнований
– образовательных программ
– медийного продвижения игры
Лучшие идеи могут быть включены в официальное положение будущего турнира.
Таким образом турнир может стать результатом коллективного творчества международного шашечного сообщества. И именно идея каждого из вас может стать центром этого проекта. Мы ждем предложений от Вас до 30 апреля 2026 года.
Социальные проекты: первый командный онлайн чемпионат среди тюрем
Помимо спортивных проектов NDF уделяет большое внимание социальным инициативам.
5 марта состоялось уникальное событие – первый в мире командный чемпионат среди тюрем по шашкам.
Подготовка к этому проекту велась Национальной федерацией шашек США более шести месяцев.
В пилотном онлайн-турнире приняли участие 8 команд из трёх стран – Англии, Латвии и Грузии.
Соревнование проводилось в сотрудничестве с Международной шахматной федерацией (FIDE), для которой подобные турниры среди исправительных учреждений уже стали традицией.
Так, в 2025 году в аналогичном шахматном турнире участвовали 135 команд из 57 стран, что показывает масштаб и значимость этой социальной инициативы.
Цель проекта – дать людям, временно лишённым свободы, возможность развивать интеллектуальные способности, сохранять связь с образовательной и культурной средой и готовиться к возвращению в общество.
“The NDF of the USA” считает, что интеллектуальные игры, такие как шашки и шахматы, могут стать важным инструментом личностного развития, самодисциплины и социальной адаптации.

Взгляд в будущее
Сегодня The American Draughts Project находится в начале своего пути. Но уже сделано не мало. Проведен MIAMI OPEN – 2025, несколько соревнований среди детей, ученик Евгений Богуш, нашего Президента NDF, A.Shcherbatyuk, впервые в истории США поехал на чемпионат Мира среди молодежи в Турцию, успешно прошел первый социальный проект в тюрьмах. Представители NDF принимают активное участие в фестивалях, где привелают детей и их родителей к занятиям по шашкам.
Уже сейчас проект объединяет игроков из разных стран и открывает новые возможности для развития шашек в Соединённых Штатах.
Организаторы убеждены, что сочетание спортивных соревнований, образовательных инициатив и международного сотрудничества позволит создать в США новую площадку для развития мировых шашек.
И, возможно, именно этот проект станет важным шагом на пути к будущему игры в США.
В истории интеллектуальных игр новые центры развития появлялись там, где встречались талант игроков, энергия организаторов и поддержка международного сообщества.
